The Biggest Pop Stars of The 80’s & 90’s – Where Are They Now? And What Is Their Net Worth?

The '80s and the '90s gave us some timeless hits and widely outlandish fads. Behind those hits and crazy fashion during that era, we have some of our favorite pop stars who helped characterize that colorful generation.

Today, most of these pop stars seem to have dropped off of the face of the earth, and for celebrities who once had the cameras following their every move, we are curious about what they are up to these days. We’ve done you a solid and rounded up a list of past pop stars with details about their lives beyond their most famous years.

Björn Ulvaeus - Estimated $300 Million

Björn Kristian Ulvaeus is a producer, songwriter, and composer who is best known for his time with the Swedish pop group, ABBA. Once the group disbanded, Ulvaeus moved over to producing work and he had a hand in putting together the 1999 musical, Mama Mia!. He co-produced the movie alongside his close friend and former bandmate, Benny Andersson.

In 2005, he faced some legal trouble over back taxes with the Swedish Tax Agency claiming that he owed an estimated $12.8 million. Ulvaeus decided to make the payment just as a precaution but two and a half years later, a judge found ruled in his favor - meaning that he never did owe anything.

Cyndi Lauper - Estimated $30 Million

Girls Just Want To Have Fun is still a girl’s anthem and singer Cyndi Lauper is behind the timeless hit. Her first album She’s So Unusual earned her the Best New Artist nod during the 27th Grammys in 1985. She’s also a celebrated humanitarian, particularly when championing to change the lives of gay people through True Colors United.

Lauper is one of the stars who have continued their careers as entertainers throughout the years, and her career spans four decades now. In 2010, she appeared on The Celebrity Apprentice and finished in sixth place. Lauper is set to perform during the 2019 Stonewall 50 - WorldPride NYC opening ceremony.

George Michael - Estimated $200 Million

George Michael was an English singer who became famous for being a part of the duo Wham! which rose to prominence with their single Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. He then embarked on a solo career and became one of the best-selling music artists of all time. His debut single Careless Whisper became an international hit and remains to be a popular classic today.

He also won a number of accolades throughout his career, but sadly, his life was plagued by substance abuse, eventually taking a toll on his body. George died at age 53. His last released album, while he was alive, was Symphonica in 2014, two years before his passing.

Kylie Minogue – Estimated $75 Million

Remember the artist who you couldn't get out of your head in the '90s and in the early '00s? Kylie Minogue has been under the spotlight ever since the late '80s and has become extremely famous for her talent. With a total net worth estimated at $75 million, she could just easily stop performing.

However, she keeps on following her passion instead. She released her album, Golden, in 2018 and went ahead and toured around Europe and the rest of the world on her Golden Tour. She's currently doing her Step Back in Time: The Definitive Collection summer tour with shows set in Europe.

Natalie Imbruglia – Estimated $14 Million

In 1997, Natalie Imbruglia caught the world by surprise when she released her first album, Left of the Middle, which featured her massive hit song, Torn. She was born in Australia in 1975 and has grown to prominence with her many talents.

On top of singing and songwriting, she’s also no stranger to the TV screen and the movie sets, having appeared in movies like Johnny English and Closed for Winter. She has released a total of five studio albums and has recently announced that she is working on new music with Albert Hammond Jr. from The Strokes. It is set to be released sometime in 2019.

 

Benny Andersson - Estimated $230 Million

In 1966, Swedish composer-musician Benny Andersson linked up with Björn Ulvaeus and they started working on songs together. He was also a member of ABBA up until it disbanded in 1982. He continued his work as a composer, working on several musicals, including the 2018 film, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

In 2001, Andersson formed his band Benny Anderssons Orkester (BAO) and since then, he has released five albums as part of the 16-member act. Andersson was previously married to former bandmate Anni-Frid Lyngstad after a nine-year-long engagement but they divorced in 1981. He's now married to Mona Norklit and their son Ludvig has followed suit, forming his own successful band.

Chrissie Hynde - Estimated $12 Million

Christine Hynde is one of the iconic musicians from the late '80s and '90s. She is a member of The Pretenders, a rock band that she has founded in 1978. In 1979, the band released their first single Brass In Pocket that reached the number one spot on the UK charts.

In the 2000s onwards, Hynde stayed on with The Pretenders releasing new recordings and embarking on numerous tours worldwide. According to Hynde, the band’s new album Hate for Sale and her solo album Valve Bone Woe, in collaboration with artist Marcus de Vries, maybe out in 2019. At 67 years old, Hynde still looks great, thanks to a meat-free healthy diet.

Nina Persson - Estimated $10 Million

In 1992, guitarist Peter Svensson, keyboardist Lars-Olof Johansson, drummer Bengt Lagerberg, bassist Magnus Sveningsson, and singer Nina Persson formed The Cardigans. The Swedish rock band released its debut album in 1994 but it was their second album Life that earned them international recognition.

The band went on a hiatus in 2006 but they reunited in 2012 for several concerts. In 2010, Persson had surgery after she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She lived in Harlen, New York with her family for several years before relocating to Sweden in 2015. Persson married American author and songwriter Nathan Larson in 2001 and they had their son Nils in 2010 through In Vitro Fertilization.

Barry Gibb - Estimated $90 Million

English singer and record producer Sir Barry Alan Gibb gained fame as the co-founder of the Bee Gees. He formed the group alongside his younger twin brothers Maurice and Robin Gibb. The Guinness World Records recognizes Barry as a top-ranking songwriter, placing him second behind Paul McCartney. Gibb launched his solo career in 2012 and he released two albums as a solo act.

In 2006, Gibb bought a Hendersonville mansion formerly owned by American singer Johnny Cash and his wife June. Unfortunately, the house caught fire the very next year while undergoing some restoration work to transform it into a songwriting retreat. Gibb and his wife Linda Gray are dual citizens, having attained their U.S. citizenship in 2009.  

Madonna - Estimated $850 Million

Madonna, also known as the Queen of Pop, made a name in the industry by going against the norm in her songs, videos, and performances. This earned her millions of dollars. The Guinness World Records recognizes this pop icon as the best-selling female recording artist in music history.

Starting out as a Los Angeles Lakers cheerleader, it was not long before The Jacksons discovered Paula Abdul. She choreographed Janet Jackson’s music videos before getting signed to Virgin Records. Her first studio album recorded immense success, selling millions of copies.

Paula then became a judge on a number of shows, including American Idol, The X Factor, and So You Think You Can Dance, etc. Many ladies and some men would want to learn Abdul’s anti-aging secrets because, at 56, she looks like she is in her early 30s.  Paula's recent performance at the Billboard Music Awards in May 2019 was exceptional.

April 2019 saw Elvis Costello release the Purse EP after reuniting with The Imposters, his former back-up band. This is the first album they have released in a decade. At first, the band only released the exclusive vinyl edition but now, it is also available digitally.

Elvis wears multiple hats. He is not only a musician, but a singer-songwriter, occasional actor, TV presenter, record producer, and author. Costello’s career started way back in the '70s, collecting numerous awards on the way. It looks like his retirement plans have music written all over them.

Bonnie Tyler is still a super pop star even after being in the game for decades. As a matter of fact, Tyler is currently selling her new album known as Between The Earth and the Stars. She will also be in London on September 18, 2019, performing her premier major headline show.

Bonnie’s one-of-a-kind voice came about after she went through an operation to get rid of her vocal nodules. Having made a fortune from her singing talent, Tyler has put in millions in real estate investing and she's the proud owner of several homes.

The androgynous Culture Club lead singer/style icon Boy George became popular in the '80s. Amongst the group's hit songs include Do You Really Want to Hurt Me and Karma Chameleon. His soulful voice and distinctive appearance became his trademark. Sadly, his drug addiction, and getting arrested for cannabis possession (allegedly) took a toll on the band’s last two albums, contributing to their eventual split.

Later in the 1990s, Boy George went solo as a soul musician with influences from the reggae and rhythm and blues genres. Recently, George has released fewer songs but he's participated in the 8th season of  The Celebrity Apprentice in support of Safe Kids Worldwide.

Marie Fredriksson - Estimated $60 Million

Swedish singer/songwriter Marie Fredriksson is one half of Roxette, the famous '80s pop-rock group. In 1986, she created the group alongside musician Per Gessle and they ended up achieving international success going into the early '90s. Their list of hit songs includes Listen to Your Heart and It Must Have Been Love.

In 2002, Fredriksson started cancer treatment but she continued making music and released the album The Change. In 2008, Roxette reunited and they released their 10th studio album in 2016. Since 2017, Fredriksson has released three singles before announcing that she would be retiring from touring.

Known for his unique, and strong husky vocals, Bryan Adams has enjoyed a long career spanning over three decades. When he is not creating memorable hits, he loves working as a professional photographer, philanthropist, animal, and human rights activist championing learning and education opportunities for young people globally.

Susanna Hoffs is an American singer, actress, and guitarist. She is one of the founders of the pop-rock band, The Bangles. The band found fame with their breakthrough album Different Light in 1986, with hits like Manic Monday and Walk Like an Egyptian.

The band broke up and she went solo for a while before reuniting with the band in 2000. Their most recent album, Ladies And Gentlemen... The Bangles! was released in 2014. She also appeared in the film The Allnighter, which, unfortunately, flopped at the box office. She's currently married, has two kids, and follows a vegetarian diet.

Country musician extraordinaire, Vince Gill, is one of the artists who has made a mark in the industry. He began his musical journey by studying and playing musical instruments. He played in multiple bluegrass groups in high school.

Gill elevated his career after school, taking more high-profile jobs. He is a very serious man in the studio coming up with outstanding music that has not only earned him millions but has given him 18 Country Music Association Awards and 20 Grammy Awards. Gill is working on Okie, his new album that will be released in August 2019.

Anni-Frid Lyngstad - Estimated $300 Million

Anni-Frid Lyngstad goes by the name Frida and she’s a Norwegian/Swedish singer/songwriter as well as an environmentalist. Lyngstad is yet another star who rose with the pop band, ABBA. Frida ventured into a solo career, releasing her first album in 1982 just when the group had disbanded. She followed through with the second album in 1984 and that was her last release.

Lyngstad became the Countess of Plauen and  Princess Reuss when she married her third husband, Prince Heinrich Ruzzo in 1992. Ruzzo died in 1999 and the previous year, she lost her 30-year-old daughter to a car accident. She also made a comeback in 2005 and released a series of singles afterward.

 

Patti LaBelle - Estimated $50 Million

Prolific singer Patti LaBelle became recognized for being a part of the Ordettes, which later became the Bluebelles. They released several hit songs, including If Only You Knew, Stir It Up, and On My Own. The group disbanded in 1977 due to conflicts in their musical direction. LaBelle is also a successful solo artist, having released critically-acclaimed albums like I’m in Love Again.

Throughout her career, she's achieved musical stardom, receiving several accolades. Bel Hommage, which is LaBelle’s first jazz album, came out in 2017. Besides music, LaBelle is also an actress and author. She now enjoys a quiet life in her Philadelphia property while spending considerable time in L.A. and the Bahamas.

John Howard Jones made girls swoon with his edgy blonde mane and his new wave tunes. The English singer and songwriter has been huge since 1983 and has contributed to the industry with over 15 Top 40 hit singles all over the world. Some of his most famous songs were What Is Love and No One Is To Blame.

He's been associated with the movement called the Second British Invasion of the United States. Howard Jones is still rocking the stage and his most recent album Transform has been released in 2019, his first studio album in a decade. Jones is also a vegetarian and an animal rights advocate.

Agnetha Fältskog - Estimated $200 Million

Agnetha Fältskog shot to fame as one of the famous faces behind the '70s/'80s pop band, ABBA. Before joining the musical band, Agnetha worked as a telephonist at an automobile firm but she still moonlighted as a musician performing with a local dance band.

Before joining ABBA, she had achieved success as a solo artist with her debut single reaching the top spot in Sweden. After the release of ABBA’s last album I Stand Alone, she went on a 17-year hiatus focusing on life as a mother. She re-launched her career in 2004 and at the age of 69, she’s still releasing music and isn’t about to settle in a retirement home.

Alison Moyet - Estimated $18 Million

The so-called synth-pop first came into the light in the 1970s but it reached its peak in the 1980s. Singer Alison Moyet was a big exponent of this genre. She first gained recognition as a part of the duo Yazoo with hits like Don't Go and Only You.

At that time, she was known for her cool hairdos and bold and trendy eye makeup and her bluesy deep voice. Eventually, she became a solo act after Yazoo disbanded. After so many years, and despite having had three children, she is still active in the music business. In 2017, she released her ninth album, Other.

Nik Kershaw - Estimated $20 Million

Nik Kershaw is an English singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist. He's had a very prolific career since he rose to prominence in 1984 with hits like Wouldn't It Be Good and The Riddle. He's also had very strong collaborations with stars like Elton John, Sia, and Bonnie Tyler over the years, and has authored songs for other performers such as Chesney Hawkes.

Nik got married to musician Sheri Kershaw and after 20 years together and three children, they got a divorce in 2003. He's since remarried and is still performing each year in '80s revival shows and festivals. His latest album Ei8ht was released in 2012.

Sheena Easton - Estimated $15 Million

Scottish-American singer Sheena Easton started her career in a music reality TV show, but she's found great success since putting out her first two singles Modern Girl and 9 to 5. Both of them were hits on the UK charts and the latter was certified gold. She's been a Grammy nominee multiple times and has received the award on two occasions.

Sheena's other important hits were Strut and For Your Eyes Only, the theme song for the James Bond film of the same title. In 2018, she was a part of the cast of the Broadway musical, 42nd Street. Easton has been married four times and has two adopted children.

Andrew Ridgeley - Estimated $30 Million

Andrew Ridgeley is an English singer and songwriter better known for being the other half of the duo, Wham! After the split of the duo, he actually remained close to George Michael and even co-wrote his single Careless Whisper, from which he still get an insane amount of money from royalties.

He had a solo career that never found success, only releasing one album Son of Albert in 1990, which was one of the worst-reviewed albums of the time. He also tried his luck in acting before returning to the UK permanently. He currently lives in Cornwall.

Shirlie Holliman - Estimated $1 Million

Shirlie Holliman is an English singer, who became popular in the 1980s as part of the female duo, Pepsi and Shirlie. They had two Top Ten hits in the UK: Heartache and Goodbye Stranger. The group took a hiatus a couple of years later but reunited in 2000. They made backing vocals for the song Bag It Up by Geri Halliwell and joined the Here & Now tour.

Holliman married Spandau Ballet's Martin Kemp in 1988 and they became parents to two children. In the mid-'90s, Shirlie had to focus on taking care of her husband when his health took a turn for the worse due to his brain tumors. Thankfully, he recovered.

Pepsi DeMacque - Estimated $1 Million

Helen (a.k.a Pepsi) DeMacque is an English singer. She started out as one of the singers and dancers for the duo Wham! alongside Shirlie Holliman. The two women, after their job with Wham!, would later form their own pop duo named Pepsi & Shirlie. The duo had their share of hits, fame, and earnings before taking a break in 1989.

After reuniting in 2000, they've since been collaborating with other artists and going on tours with them. Meanwhile, DeMacque has also tried her hand on acting on TV and in films and has been running a charter sailing business with her hubby, James Crockett.

 

Gloria Estefan - Estimated $500 Million

Cuban-American singer, actress, songwriter, and businesswoman Gloria Estefan, had international success with her 1985 hit, Conga. Her beginnings were in the group Miami Latin Boys but she became a solo artist in 1989. She survived a severe bus accident and later made a comeback with her album and tour, Into The Light.

She's received three Grammy Awards, several Billboard Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a spot on the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She is also an actress and has recently appeared in an episode of the comedy, One Day At a Time, in 2019.

Jason Donovan - Estimated $10 Million

Jason Donovan is an Australian singer and actor. He became known for his role on the Aussie soap opera Neighbours alongside future pop superstar, Kylie Minogue. Jason would eventually turn to the music industry with his debut album Ten Good Reasons in 1989, which became the highest-selling album in the UK that year.

His portfolio also includes several stage performances in musicals like Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Sweeney Todd. Donovan got married in 2008 after 20 years and three children with his partner, Angela Malloch. In 2016, he toured the United Kindom with his Ten Good Reasons and Greatest Hits Tour.

Jay Aston - Estimated $145 K

Jay Aston is an English singer known for being a member of the music group, Bucks Fizz. She had legal problems when she tried to go solo and the management company of the group sued her over the terms in her contract, but later let her walk with an injunction against starting a solo career.

After the case was settled, she released a couple of singles and albums on her own without much success until she reunited with former members of the group to form a band called the Orginal Bucks Fizz. She got married and had one daughter, but was diagnosed with mouth cancer in 2018.

Carol Decker - Estimated $8 Million

Carol Decker is an English singer, actress, and lead vocalist of her band T'Pau. The group gained international fame during the late 1980s. Carol Decker has also dabbled in TV, participating in shows like Just The Two of Us and Celebrity Masterchef, and appearing in the music video for the charity telethon single I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by Scottish duo The Proclaimers in 2007.

That same year, she released her latest single Just Dream, in a download-only format. Decker is married to Richard Coates (who owns and manages a restaurant) and the couple has two children, Scarlett and Dylan.

Richard Marx - Estimated $18 Million

Pop/rock singer Richard Marx's first album sold over 30 million copies worldwide, spawning four hit singles, and it also sold more than four million copies in the U.S. alone.  His debut single, Don't Mean Nothing, reached the 3rd position on the Billboard Hot 100.

It also earned Marx a Grammy nomination under the Best Rock Vocal Performance category. His former wife, actress Cynthia Rhodes, was appeared in the video for the song. The couple filed for divorce in 2014 after 25 years of marriage. Between 2016 and 2017, Marx sang Right Here Waiting on Australian television for a commercial for the metasearch engine, HotelsCombined.

Ray Parker Jr. - Estimated $5 Million

Ray Parker Jr. is best known for writing and performing the Ghostbusters’ title song. He rose to fame in the '60s while performing at the 20 Grand Country Club with the Bohannon band. Besides singing, Parker also doubles as a guitarist and an actor with his list of movies like Gimme a Break, Pryor's Place,  Enemy Territory, and Disorderlies. In 2009, Parker appeared on 21 Jump Street as well as on Kids Incorporated.

For Parker’s contribution to music, he was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2014. It's no mean feat to amass a $5-million fortune which he probably plans to add to his retirement investment.

Toni Basil - Estimated $5 Million

Singer Toni Basil's music career kicked off back in 1966. She is also a songwriter, choreographer, filmmaker, dancer, and a film director. Her 1982 hit song Mickey which she performed and choreographed herself gained her widespread prominence. In 1997, Basil was the recipient of the American Choreography Award in recognition of her achievements in the field.

In 2009, Mickey ranked 5th on VH1's list of the Greatest One Hit Wonders.  Throughout Basil’s recording career, she only launched two albums, including Shoppin’ from A to Z’ and Word Of Mouth. We’re not sure whether she’s had any cosmetic surgery but she's aging pretty well for someone in her 70s.

Rick Springfield - Estimated $12 Million

Springfield was a part of a pop-rock band known as Zoot for three years. He later began his solo career with the single Speak to the Sky, appearing on the Australian top 10 in mid-1972. His 1981 hit song Jessie's Girl won him a Grammy Award in recognition of his performance as the Best Male Rock Vocalist.

As an actor, Springfield has appeared in numerous productions, including True Detective, Ricki, and the Flash, and General Hospital. Even though he once attempted to commit suicide while young, we are glad that his mental health is now stable. In 2017, Springfield performed in American Horror Story as Pastor Charles.

 

Rickie Lee Jones - Estimated $4 Million

Two-time Grammy recipient Rickie Jones has recorded music exploring diverse styles like Jazz, Blues, rock, pop, and soul throughout her five-decade career. Her album Pirates reached the 49th spot on the NPR's list of the 150 Greatest Albums Made by Women. She released her autobiography Rickie Lee in 2018 and a cover for Bad Company, a song originally sung by Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke.

Jones is now happily married to music producer Pascal Nabet Meyer, and probably won’t be needing any couples therapy as she did in her previous relationships.

Kenny Loggins - Estimated $20 Million

Kenneth Clark Loggins, better known as Kenny Loggins, started out his career recording with the country-rock, Nitty Gritty Band. Seven albums came out of the collaboration as Loggins and Messina between 1972 to 1977. When Loggins went solo, he achieved success by churning out a series of soundtracks, including Footloose.

Loggins faced possible bankruptcy when he was still married to his second wife, Julia Cooper. He seems to have stayed afloat and he's still involved in the entertainment industry. He continues recording adult contemporary music over the years. In 2017, he performed at Carnegie Hall in celebration of the music of the late Aretha Franklin.

 

Jenny Berggren - Unknown

After ABBA, Ace of Base was amongst the most successful group acts to have come out of Sweden. Jenny Berggren was one of the band’s members serving as the lead singer alongside her siblings Linn and Jonas. Since 1995, Berggren has been focusing her efforts on writing songs as well as performing solo.

In 2010, she released My Story which was her debut album. Berggren is also quite the philanthropist and she volunteers her time to charity work by staging several Christian concerts. She is married to Swedish pianist Jakob Petren and they have two children together.

Morten Harket - Estimated $60 Million

The 56-year-old Morten Harket is best known as the frontman for the '80s band, A-ha. The pop band formed in September 1982 composed of guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy, and Magne Furuholmen as the keyboardist. The trio released ten studio albums topping the international charts after their cult-hit Take On Me marked their breakthrough in 1985.

In 2010, A-ha disbanded after performing their last concert in Oslo. As a solo artist, Harket has released six albums. Ah-a later reunited in 2015 and in June 2017, they performed at MTV Unplugged. With a $60-million fortune,  Harket is far from going bankrupt.

 

Toyah Willcox - Estimated $15 Million

Toyah Willcox is an English musician with over four decades of a successful career.
